There is an interrelationship between the form and function of any text. What does an author’s use of any given literary form intend to do? What is the function of a letter? What does it mean that Paul has written letters? How do his letters function?
In the ancient world, as in ours, there are standard epistolary formulae that are used. 144 We are using a formula that is usually just a polite way to address the person to whom we are writing.
